Artist Affirmation
As I grow as an artist, I become more of who I’m truly meant to be.
Art carries meaning for every viewer, – and no perspective is truly wrong – but! I plan on explaining in depth the creation and meaning of each of my ceramic vessels! Starting from the very beginning!
My thesis started in fall of 2023, where I spent an entire semester building a completely different body of work. At first, I wanted to create an abundance piece. I saw this precariously stacked tower of vases so vividly in my mind. I truly thought it was an interesting concept. Yet, life has a funny way of changing my plans unexpectedly.
By the end of the fall semester, I had cranked out 96 small vases. I left most of them un-glazed, thinking it would help me speed things up to hit my goal of 500. But once I was on my own over winter break, it hit me. If I actually wanted to say something with my art, I needed a whole lot more thought and care. I realized I didn’t need to impress anyone. Churning out a ton of work that didn’t really show my creative voice wasn’t the way to go. Sure, practicing helped me get better technically, but the real story I wanted to tell was buried under all that quantity.
I went back to the drawing board for weeks. I sketched on vacation and asked for feedback and critique from whatever source was closest to me. (Thank you so much mom!) I came up with a whole new series to replace my original abundance piece. The first was a series of moon jars, decorated with endangered habitats and animals. One side would be the ideal version of the habitat, the other side being consumed by inky darkness. I went ahead and even made the first concept- The Mesa Jar!

This led to two more habitat explorations. I explored the prairie and arctic habitats. Sadly, those vessels were lost to the kiln gods. I landed on the concept that started Following the Light soon after. Funnily enough I do believe the clay itself helped me find my own path, being in itself my guiding light! (ha ha moths)
I believe it is absolutely essential to pause and truly appreciate the art that has inspired the evolution of my unique style. It compels you to reconnect with your essence. It’s a powerful reminder that regardless of how far you wander or how intimidating the world seems, you will always have the strength of your own spirit.
Of course I have older work, but this would be the beginning of my sculptural vessels! I look forward to next time, where I want to begin talking about the pieces within my thesis! I have so much to share about each piece, from concept to creation!
Have a lovely day!
Kayla
